Team coaching or organizational coaching is all about relationships. There is a vision for a team or organization and the relationship working towards that common goal. Different perspectives and agendas come into play and unless everyone is bringing in what the 3rd entity/relationship/team wants, then there will always be negative conflict. Every individual is responsible for what they bring into a relationship and the identity of the relationship first needs to be identified for the individuals who are a part of it. When something is not running smoothly in a team it is because ‘something is trying to happen’ in the relationship. If there is anger, for example, it might be that ‘trust’ has been broken that was ‘expected’ in this relationship. Until the individuals in the relationship are aware that trust is an agreed upon quality of the relationship, and how it is to be represented, then blame, criticism, stonewalling and contempt will continue to show up. These toxic behaviors are a must to bring to awareness in all organizations.

When coaching a team, all team members must be part of the relationship, team coaching. If a manager is part of a team then he or she is part of that 3rd entity relationship and needs to be part of the team coaching to make it work.

When working with organizations, a culture may be wanting to change and all participants of that culture are in that relationship. There will be many subgroups and relationships that are intertwined and overlapping. The voice of the system, be it a team or an organization, needs to be heard. All voices of the system are important and it is the coaches job to help the organization bring those voices to the ears of all those in the relationship.
